At Barnes Junior School we value a mathematics mastery curriculum that is engaging and thought provoking. This curriculum is ambitious and inclusive; tailored through the creative use of resources, support and challenge to meet the needs of all learners. Our aim is for children to develop the necessary skills to become deep thinkers, acquiring mathematical skills that can be recalled quickly and applied in a range of contexts. Our maths curriculum will equip children with skills and knowledge they can develop and utilise in their future lives.
At Barnes Junior School we use the new National Curriculum for Mathematics (2014) as the basis of our mathematics curriculum. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils achieve mastery in the key concepts of mathematics in order to make progress and avoid gaps in their understanding that provide barriers to learning as they move through education.
Daily maths lessons follow a mastery approach and also incorporate a mental maths session to practise counting, fact recall and calculation skills. Times tables facts are central to KS2 maths and at Barnes Junior School we support the children in a range of ways to develop a fluent recall of times table facts up to 12 x 12.
Mathematics equips pupils with the uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways. Mathematics is important in everyday life. It is integral to all aspects of life and at Barnes Junior School we endeavour to ensure that children develop a positive and enthusiastic attitude towards mathematics that will stay with them.
